Michał Grzyb – Mechatronics Engineer, Former President and Team Leader of LEM Wrocław Motorsport
From a Student Club to the World Stage
Why did you choose Wrocław University of Science and Technology?
I was attracted by the active student clubs, as I've always enjoyed working on various projects, though I previously lacked the resources and space to do so. The university's high ranking was also appealing. I chose Mechatronics over Automation and Robotics because it is more interdisciplinary – I like to gain knowledge across different fields to work comprehensively. Currently, I am continuing my studies in Electronic Mechatronics Systems, where I can focus more on electronics, which gives me the most satisfaction.
What do you like about the university?
Primarily, the student clubs – there are so many that everyone can find something for themselves. It's great that the university now allows students to count their club activities toward their degree – I contributed to this change. I discussed it multiple times with the Vice-Dean for Student Affairs of the Mechanical Faculty, Dr. Paweł Krowicki, who was the first to implement this option, as well as with our club supervisor, Dr. Monika Magdziak-Tokłowicz. This shows that Wrocław University of Science and Technology listens to students and responds to their needs.
Do you like Wrocław?
It never ceases to surprise me. It's a city full of students, nightlife, and opportunities to meet interesting people. I also love the food scene – the choices are enormous! The city is well-connected, and career prospects are much better than in smaller towns.
"12th place overall at the Aragon circuit, 3rd place in Gymkhana, and 1st among Polish teams. This experience introduced me to management, numbers, and planning faster than most students."
How can we encourage international students to study in Poland?
Poland has so many wonderful things that we often overlook! Mountains, the sea, lakes – there are endless opportunities for sports and exploration. Surprisingly, the country is well-connected and safe. And if someone thinks Poles don't smile at each other – hearing a foreigner say a broken 'hello' can instantly make them feel like a friend.
Your involvement with LEM Wrocław Motorsport
For two years, I was president of a team building electric racing motorcycles for the international MotoStudent competition. I didn't seek the position, but I've always enjoyed leading groups. I learned to manage a team, resolve long-standing conflicts, and handle the budget (around 700,000 PLN) and projects under time pressure. Our achievements? 12th place overall (out of 40+ teams worldwide) at the Aragon circuit, 3rd place in Gymkhana, and 1st among Polish teams. This experience introduced me to management, numbers, and planning faster than most students, which I hope will help me in my future career – or even if I start my own company.
Other interests outside motorsport
I enjoy sports – in winter you can find me on the ice rink, and in summer on rollerblades on one of Wrocław's many cycling paths. When I have more free time, I escape to the mountains to explore hiking trails.
Does the university support your interests?
The university provides opportunities to engage in student clubs, which develop creativity, responsibility, and the ability to handle different situations.
Future plans
I want to develop small electric vehicles – motorcycles, scooters, e-bikes, and skateboards. They are quiet, take up little space, and allow efficient city travel. This is an area I'm passionate about and where I can genuinely improve the quality of life for residents in Wrocław and other major cities.
